Study of Emotional Intelligence Free Samples-Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Describe about the Study of Emotional Intelligence. Answer: Every human being has emotions in himself or herself and they differ from one individual to another. Emotions usually have huge impact on the social life of a person and if they are not handled and managed in the right way, they may lead to deterioration of ones social life (Williamson, 2015). The process by which someone gets to identify his or her emotions, learn how to reason about them, manage them and also get to manage the emotions of those around him or her is called emotional intelligence. Over the years I had always thought that emotional intelligence was something that was in built in a person, that is, a person was born with it and possessed it naturally. Since I got some experiences in the various places I had worked, my perception about emotional intelligence changed (Marks, Horrocks 2016). I had come to realize that yes it is true that some people naturally has high emotional intelligence than others but it also true that a person can acquire emotional intelligence or improve it. From my work place experiences I had learnt to identify my emotional strengths and weaknesses. This became very needful when I realized that I needed to improve my work performances and give outstanding results. I used the personal SWOT analysis as an appropriate tool for me to carry out this exercise. I had to use the concept of SWOT analysis so that I can assess my capabilities. From my personal SWOT assessment, I learnt that I possessed the following strengths: having a perspective, when it came to providing wise counsel to others I was very useful and I was also able to find solutions and make right decisions in challenging situations. I had to be kind to my colleagues, and therefore, I could offer assistance whenever needed. Being persistent, no matter how hard a situation seemed to be, I never gave up until the objective was achieved. The love of learning, I was perfect in everything and hence in some occasions, I found myself making mistakes. I never cared about the criticism of the others nor drew back after making the mistakes but instead I focused on learning from the mistakes. My weaknesses were as follows; I was always poor when it came to socializing with people or getting used to them. Close-mindedness, I always believed that my ideas and opinions were the best and never took time to think about what the others had in mind. Low self- esteem, I always wanted to be thought highly of by people after I had a success in whatever I was doing and if they failed to do so, I would start to think negatively of myself and even the successful outcome. The opportunity I had was that I had a lot of people to seek assistance from and to get knowledge from. Furthermore they would always provide a favorable environment for one to fit in. The competitive environment formed by my fellow colleagues was the only threat I had. This, therefore, meant that I keep working hard instead of relaxing. In my work place not everything went us I had expected them to. In some instances I found myself in situations that were very stressful and gave a negative impact to my emotions. In one instance I was given a lot of tasks to do. I kept on asking myself why I was the one chosen to do those tasks or if I had done something wrong that now I was facing the consequence. To make it worse, nobody offered me any help and I ended up taking a lot of hours to complete the tasks. Due to this I had negative feelings about what people thought about me. In such a case, I felt so sad and angered. I learnt that for me to avoid the negative emotional state caused by such an instance I need to always take everything the positive, for instance taking the many tasks given to me as an opportunity to learn how to multi-task. Another instance was when I had failed to meet the objectives that I had set for myself. This made me feel like a failure and worthless. Occasionally, I blamed myself and therefore, I had low feelings about myself. To avoid such circumstances I had to learn how to accept defeat and deal with it in a way that it does not cause a negative impact on my emotional state. Another instance was when I had a project and no one gave me their support. No matter how hard I tried to initiate them into by asking for their ideas or what they thought about a particular action, nobody showed any interest. I felt more so sad and isolated and never was comfortable doing the project. Later own I learnt that search situations should never set me back but instead I should always forge with whatever I have decided to do whether the others are in support of it or not. I as any normal person I always had things or situations that would trigger my emotional state. To be specific what particular triggered my emotional state was what people said and did. For instance when I was not appreciated for anything good I had done then I would become low in spirit. Having identified this as my trigger I had to learn to stop doing things to appreciate for and always not be demanding to people to how they should treat me but be happy for whatever opinion they have. Such a reaction from me would have a good impact on those around me. Another trigger I identified was being scrutinized. This made so angry and feel a lot of hate because I felt that those who scrutinized me always wanted to find faults in me and pin me down. I realized that I should always be great full for such me people because they helped me find my weaknesses which I needed to work on. Furthermore I needed to also accept others opinion about myself and never shut them down. One of the challenging tasks was being a leader because I had to coordinate the team I was leading. I had the role of ensuring that every member of the team fully participated. This meant that I had to manage and control my emotions (Ahuja, 2016). Since emotions are usually the main setbacks when working in teams. One major value that I had to portray was valuing the others point of view even if I never agreed with them. My role was to ensure that the team accomplished the required tasks. I also had to portray effective communication among the group members to avoid a lot of misunderstanding. From the various experiences I had in my work place, I found several ways on how to improve my emotional intelligence. To overcome this, I had to change my negative emotions and the fear of being rejected. Also I had to learn to have an open mind. Another way is by managing stress, this would be done by engaging in activities that would relieve of the stress such as doing exercise or listening to cool music. Another way is by avoiding being reactive when dealing with very difficult people. I had to learn how to control myself and check the consequence of my reaction. The experiences that I learnt from the workplace have kept me delighted all through. I have now learnt how to manage my emotions and those of other people. References Ahuja, S. (2016).
